BACKGROUND: The Senhance® Robotic System is a new laparoscopy-based platform that has been increasingly used in radical prostatectomy (RP) procedures. The purpose of this study is to compare the outcome of Senhance RP (SRP) with da Vinci RP (DRP) cases. METHODS: From August 2019 to April 2022, we prospectively recruited 63 cases of SRP. We compared the perioperative data, postoperative complication rates, short-term surgical outcomes (3-month postoperative undetectable prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and incontinence rates), learning curves, and cost analysis with data from 63 matched da Vinci Xi RP cases. RESULTS: There was no difference in BL (180 versus 180 ml, p = 0.86) and postoperative surgical complication rate (Clavient -Dindo grade I-IV, 25.3 versus 22.2%, p = 0.21) between the SRP cases and the DRP. Regarding the oncologic and continence function, there was no difference between positive margin rate (36.5% versus 41.3%, p = 0.58), rate of undetectable PSA level at postoperative 3 months (68.3 versus 66.7%, p = 0.85), and incontinence rate (14.3 versus 15.9%, p = 1.0) at postoperative 3 months between the two cohorts. The learning curve showed a quick downward slope for laparoscopic experienced surgeons. The median pocket cost for SRP patients in our hospital was $4170, which was lower than $7675 for the DRP patients. CONCLUSIONS: Safety and short-term outcomes are comparable between SRP and DRP. For experienced LRP surgeons, using the Senhance system to perform RP is straightforward. With a more affordable price as its biggest advantage, the Senhance system may serve as a safe and effective alternative for robotic RP.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of an upper limb rehabilitation program on the quality of life in patients who had been first diagnosed breast cancer and subsequently underwent mastectomy. DATA SOURCES: This randomized controlled trial enrolled 48 breast cancer patients who underwent mastectomy at a medical center in Taiwan. The patients were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (n = 24) or control group (n = 24). The patients in the intervention group participated in a 12-week upper limb rehabilitation program involving face-to-face upper limb rehabilitation education and once-a month monitoring of their upper extremity activity. The control group received standard nursing care. Quality of life was assessed through EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR 23 questionnaires at baseline and weeks 4, 8, and 12 after enrollment. RESULTS: Both the intervention and control groups had significantly improved their levels of functioning, symptoms, and quality of life from baseline to week 12 after enrollment. The intervention group showed greater improvements in functioning and symptom levels after the intervention compared to the control group; however, no statistically significant differences were found. Additionally, the levels of global health status/quality of life in both groups gradually increased from baseline to week 12 CONCLUSION: An upper limb rehabilitation program is effective in improving the functioning and symptoms of breast cancer patients who have undergone mastectomy. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Patients are encouraged to undergo upper limb rehabilitation in order to improve their functioning, symptoms and quality of life.

AIM: To investigate the relationship between the prevalence of antinuclear antibody (ANA) -associated rheumatic diseases (AARD) and the presence of dense fine speckled (DFS) and homogeneous patterns in ANA tests. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled adult patients with either a DFS or homogeneous pattern in their ANA test. A mixed pattern was defined as the presence of more than one pattern reported in the test. The presence of anti-DFS70 antibodies and other common autoantibodies were detected using EUROLINE ANA Profile 23. A 1:2 propensity score matching was applied to control for demographic and other interfering factors. RESULTS: A total of 59 patients with a DFS pattern were enrolled and compared with a matched homogeneous group. The DFS group had a significantly lower prevalence of AARD (3.4% vs. 16.9%, p = .008) and the subgroup with anti-DFS70 antibodies showed an even lower prevalence (2% vs. 20%, p = .002). Among the 33 patients with monospecific anti-DFS70 antibodies, five had a mixed pattern, and all patients with common autoantibodies had an isolated DFS pattern. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study suggest that patients with a DFS pattern in their ANA test may have a lower prevalence of AARD compared with those with a homogeneous pattern. However, an isolated DFS pattern in ANA testing does not necessarily indicate the presence of monospecific anti-DFS70 antibodies or AARD. Confirmatory testing for the monospecific anti-DFS70 antibody is mandatory to exclude AARD.

Structural flexibility is a critical issue that limits the application of metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes for gas separation. Herein we propose a mixed-linker approach to suppress the structural flexibility of the CAU-10-based (CAU = Christian-Albrechts-University) membranes. Specifically, pure CAU-10-PDC membranes display high separation performance but at the same time are highly unstable for the separation of CO2/CH4. A partial substitution (30 mol.%) of the linker PDC with BDC significantly improves its stability. Such an approach also allows for decreasing the aperture size of MOFs. The optimized CAU-10-PDC-H (70/30) membrane possesses a high separation performance for CO2/CH4 (separation factor of 74.2 and CO2 permeability of 1,111.1 Barrer under 2 bar of feed pressure at 35°C). A combination of in situ characterization with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy, as well as periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations, unveils the origin of the mixed-linker approach to enhancing the structural stability of the mixed-linker CAU-10-based membranes during the gas permeation tests.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of rectal chlamydia among men who have sex with men (MSM) without human deficiency virus infection (non-HIV) remains uncertain in Taiwan, and rectal lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) among MSM has never been reported in the Far East. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From January 2020 to April 2022, MSM coming for anonymous voluntary counseling and testing, for pre-exposure prophylaxis, and for antiretroviral therapy were enrolled. All participants submitted his fecal samples and completed a QR-code questionnaire. Medical records of those who took regular medical visits for HIV were recorded. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed for all fecal samples, and ompA gene sequencing was therefore performed for each Chlamydia-positive fecal sample. RESULTS: Among 341 MSM during 2020-2022 in southern Taiwan, 21 (6.2%) had rectal chlamydia infection. Risk factors of rectal chlamydia included co-infection with rectal gonorrhea (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 6.78, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.44-31.91, P = 0.015) and multiple sexual partners (AOR 1.373, 95% CI 1.002-1.882, P = 0.048). Further ompA gene sequencing from 19 Chlamydia-positive fecal samples revealed that the prevalent genotypes or genovariants were Da (26.3%) and L2b (26.3%), followed by B (21.1%), J (14.3%), and G (9.5%). All cases of rectal LGV genovariant L2b presented as acute proctitis with diarrhea, anal pain, or discharge and were treated successfully with prolonged treatment of doxycycline. CONCLUSIONS: Rectal gonorrhea and multiple sexual partners are risk factors for rectal chlamydia. Clinicians in Taiwan should be aware of the emerging threat of rectal LGV among MSM with acute proctitis.

Background/Aims: Rituximab is known to be associated with high hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation rate in patients with resolved HBV infection and hematologic malignancy. However, data regarding HBV reactivation (HBVr) in rheumatic patients receiving rituximab is limited. To assess the HBVr rate in hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-negative patients receiving rituximab for autoimmune diseases in a large real-world cohort. Methods: From March 2006 to December 2019, 900 patients with negative HBsAg receiving at least one cycle of rituximab for autoimmune diseases in a tertiary medical center in Taiwan were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical outcome and factors associated with HBVr were analyzed. Results: After a median follow-up period of 3.3 years, 21 patients developed HBVr, among whom 17 patients were positive for hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) and four were negative. Thirteen patients had clinical hepatitis flare, while eight patients had HBsAg seroreversion without hepatitis. Old age, anti-HBc positivity, undetectable serum hepatitis B surface antibody level at rituximab initiation and a higher average rituximab dose were associated with a higher HBVr rate. There was no significant difference in the HBVr risk between rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. Among anti-HBc-negative patients, subjects without HBV vaccination at birth had an increased risk of HBVr (4/368, 1.1%) compared with those who received vaccination (0/126, 0%). Conclusions: In HBV endemic areas where occult HBV is prevalent, anti-HBc-negative patients, may still be at risk for HBVr after rituximab exposure. HBVr may still be considered in HBsAg-negative patients developing abnormal liver function after rituximab exposure, even in patients with negative anti-HBc.

The accurate prediction of thermochemistry and kinetic parameters is an important task for reaction modeling. Unfortunately, the commonly used harmonic oscillator model is often not accurate enough due to the absence of anharmonic effects. In this work, we improve the representation of an anharmonic potential energy surface (PES) using uncoupled mode (UM) approximations, which model the full-dimensional PES as a sum of one-dimensional potentials of each mode. We systematically analyze different PES sampling schemes and coordinate systems for constructing the one-dimensional potentials, and benchmark the performance of UM methods on data sets of molecular thermochemistry and kinetic properties. The results show that the accuracy of the UM approach strongly depends on how the one-dimensional potentials are defined. If one-dimensional potentials are constructed by sampling along normal mode directions (UM-N) or along the directions that minimize intermode coupling (E- and E'-optimized), the accuracies of the predicted properties are not significantly improved compared to the harmonic oscillator model. However, significant improvements can be achieved by sampling the torsional modes separately from the vibrational modes (UM-T and UM-VT). In this work, three types of coordinate systems are examined, including redundant internal coordinates (RIC), hybrid internal coordinates (HIC), and translation-rotation-internal coordinates (TRIC). The HIC and TRIC coordinate systems can outperform RIC since transition state species may contain large-amplitude interfragmentary motions that regular internal coordinates can not describe adequately. Among all the methods we examined, the activation energies and pre-exponential factors calculated using UM-VT with either TRIC or HIC best agree with the reference values. Since UM-VT requires only a number of additional single point energy calculations for each independent mode, the scaling of computational costs of UM-VT is the same as that of the standard harmonic oscillator model, making UM-VT an appealing way of calculating the thermochemistry and kinetic properties for large-size systems.

PURPOSE: Safety climate plays a critical role in nurses' safety behaviors. However, few are aware of the safety climate sub-dimensions associated with safety behavior. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nurses' perception of the workplace safety climate and their safety behavior regarding the handling of chemotherapy upon intravenous administration. METHODS: This study included a cross-sectional survey of nurses recruited by purposive sampling at three hospitals in Taiwan. A total of 484 self-administered questionnaires were returned. Each participant had to complete the questionnaire that was developed by the authors, including the Taiwanese Safety Climate Instrument and Chemotherapy Safety Precautions Questionnaire. Exploratory factor analysis and Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to verify the psychometric properties. We used the samples (N = 247) for confirmatory factor analysis to verify the model using partial least squares structural equation modeling. RESULTS: We found that nurses' perceptions of workplace safety climate can explain and predict their safety behavior regarding administration chemotherapy, particularly the dimension of "perception of interaction with colleagues," "experience of clinical jobs hindering the use of personal protective equipment," "perception of comfort using personal protective equipment," and "easy usage of personal protective equipment." The study further revealed that the dimensions of the Taiwanese Safety Climate Instrument were moderate predictors of the Chemotherapy Safety Precautions. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses have a positive perception of the workplace safety climate and frequently implement behaviors regarding the safe handling of chemotherapy. Organizational managers should enable nurses to share their perceptions of workplace safety with their colleagues and purchase easy-to-use and comfortable personal protective equipment.

BACKGROUND: Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) play important roles in sepsis and deep-seated infections, but whether NET formation correlates with clinical outcomes of patients with streptococcal bloodstream infections (BSIs) is unclear. METHODS: We analyzed serum levels of complexes of myeloperoxidase and DNA (MPO-DNA) in patients with streptococcal-BSIs. In vitro assay of NET induction by serum from BSI patients was performed. RESULTS: MPO-DNA values for the Streptococci-BSI group (n = 59) were significantly higher than those for healthy controls (p < 0.00001) and matched control groups (n = 59, p = 0.004). The rate of higher MPO-DNA levels (>1.87 µg/mL) were higher in abscess-prone streptococcal groups (streptococcus milleri group) (72.2% vs. 52.5%, p = 0.02). For patients with BSIs due to highly infective endocarditis (IE)-prone pathogens, the values of serum MPO-DNA were also higher in patients diagnosed of IE compared to their counterparts (p = 0.009). Notably, serum from patients with leukopenia could induce higher amounts of in vitro NET formation, despite having low MPO-DNA levels, suggesting that NET formation could be influenced by WBC counts. Therefore, we combined WBC counts with MPO-DNA to predict all-cause 30-day mortality in patients with commensal streptococcal-BSIs. The mortality risk was lowest among patients who had neither high MPO-DNA levels nor abnormal WBC counts (p = 0.058). Furthermore, this group of patients also had a favorable composite outcome consisting of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause mortality (p = 0.026). CONCLUSION: Together, these study data suggested that serum MPO-DNA can be a biomarker for predicting a composite outcome consisting of MACE and all-cause mortality in patients with commensal streptococcal-BSIs.

Malaria parasites such as Plasmodium falciparum have exerted formidable selective pressures on the human genome. Of the human genetic variants associated with malaria protection, beta thalassaemia (a haemoglobinopathy) was the earliest to be associated with malaria prevalence. However, the malaria protective properties of beta thalassaemic erythrocytes remain unclear. Here we studied the mechanics and surface protein expression of beta thalassaemia heterozygous erythrocytes, measured their susceptibility to P. falciparum invasion, and calculated the energy required for merozoites to invade them. We found invasion-relevant differences in beta thalassaemic cells versus matched controls, specifically: elevated membrane tension, reduced bending modulus, and higher levels of expression of the major invasion receptor basigin. However, these differences acted in opposition to each other with respect to their likely impact on invasion, and overall we did not observe beta thalassaemic cells to have lower P. falciparum invasion efficiency for any of the strains tested.

Cyclin­dependent kinase (CDK)4/6 inhibitors in combination with endocrine therapy are the current standard of care used in the first­line treatment of hormone receptor­positive/HER2­negative metastatic breast cancer (BC). Although CDK4/6 inhibitors mainly target the cell cycle, emerging evidence has indicated further potential roles of CDKs other than regulating cell cycle progression. The G1 and G2/M transition regulators, including cyclins D and E, as well as their catalytic partners, CDK2, CDK4 and CDK6, have been reported to play crucial roles in pluripotency maintenance and cell fate decisions of human pluripotent stem cells by controlling transcription factors, signaling pathways and epigenetic regulators. Dinaciclib, a CDK1/2/5/9 inhibitor, is currently being evaluated in clinical trials against various cancer types, including BC. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of CDK1/2/5/9 inhibitors in regulating BC stemness remain poorly understood. The present study aimed to examine the stemness­inhibitory effects of dinaciclib in MCF­7 (luminal) and HCC­1806 (triple­negative) BC cells. We found that this drug not only effectively reduced the self­renewal abilities and other malignant properties, but also dose­dependently decreased the protein expression levels of three BC stem cell markers, CD44, aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 family member A1 (ALDH1A1) and BMI1 proto­oncogene, polycomb ring finger (Bmi1), as well as three embryonic stem cell markers, Oct4, Nanog and Sox2. Moreover, the dinaciclib­induced decrease of Oct4 and Nanog protein expression was able to be restored by co­treatment with MG­132, a proteasome inhibitor. Forkhead box M1 (FoxM1), both a stemness­stimulating transcription factor and a cell cycle regulator, along with the Hedgehog signaling pathway, were identified as the therapeutic targets of dinaciclib. Collectively, the present results demonstrated a novel role of dinaciclib in suppressing BC stemness and indicated its potential use for future cancer treatments.

AIM: To develop and test the psychometric properties of the Taiwanese safety climate instrument suitable for nurses handling chemotherapy drugs. DESIGN: This is an instrument development study. METHOD: All four stages, including questionnaire design, expert consultation, cognitive testing and psychometric validation, were used in this study. The data were collected between August and December 2018. Nurses with experience in handling chemotherapy drugs (N = 484) at one medical centre and two regional hospitals in Taiwan completed this instrument. Data were randomly split into two groups: one group (N = 237) for exploratory factor analysis and the other (N = 247) for confirmatory factor analysis. RESULTS: The instruments' items were based on qualitative research, and the content validity index levels exceeded the acceptable value. An exploratory factor analysis revealed 43 items remaining in six factors, which accounted for 74.4% of variance. The result of the confirmatory factor analysis verified the acceptability of a 43-item model. The composite reliability values, Cronbach's alpha values, convergent validity and discriminant validity for each factor exceeded the acceptable value. CONCLUSION: Most climate safety instruments used in the health care sector focus mainly on patient safety outcomes. Furthermore, there is no safety climate instrument for handling chemotherapy drugs, and there is a cultural difference. Through the development and validation process, we have developed a new instrument suitable for nurses handling chemotherapy drugs, which has good psychometric properties. IMPACT: This instrument is valuable as its development was based on the concept of a safety climate for health care perceptions and qualitative survey findings. Hospital managers can use this instrument regularly to evaluate nurses' perceptions of the safety climate to determine the strengths and weaknesses of their workplace, thereby assisting organizational managers in proposing concrete actions.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to evaluate the clinical effect of combined topical 20% autologous serum eye drops (ASEs) along with silicone-hydrogel soft contact lenses (SCLs) in the treatment of chemical burn-induced bilateral corneal persistent epithelial defects (PEDs) and to review the literature of related studies. METHODS: From January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2019, we conducted a retrospective chart review of 8 patients with chemical burn-induced bilateral corneal PEDs who were unsuccessfully treated with conventional medical therapy and were then treated with combined topical 20% (v/v) ASEs and silicone-hydrogel CLs. The clinical effects and effectiveness of the combined treatment were evaluated. RESULTS: The bilateral corneal PEDs healed in all sixteen eyes of the eight patients within 2 weeks. The patients did not report any discomfort associated with the combined treatment. Improved ocular comfort/visual acuity and decreased conjunctival injection correlated with healing. No recurrent corneal epithelial breakdown was noted during the 3-month posttreatment follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The combined treatment of silicone-hydrogel CLs and ASEs can help to stabilize the ocular surface and successfully treat chemical burn-induced bilateral corneal PEDs. It may be considered as an alternative treatment method for patients with bilateral chemical burn-induced corneal PEDs with potential corneal melting.

Online sports gambling is a popular recreational activity. Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour as the theoretical foundation, the aim of this study was to examine for differences between gamblers and non-gamblers in terms of their attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control towards online sports gambling. 173 male students from a tertiary educational institution were recruited for this study of which 56 respondents (32%) were gamblers. A series of regression analysis revealed differences between gamblers and non-gamblers. While subjective norms and perceived behavioural control were significant predictors of gambling intentions for the gamblers group, only attitude was a significant predictor for the non-gamblers group. Further analysis showed that subjective norms had a larger effect on the gamblers group in comparison to the non-gamblers group. Physiological data from an eye tracker provided further empirical evidence that there were differences between gamblers and non-gamblers. Gamblers, perhaps because they are more familiar with gambling websites, take less time to process information. The findings from this study suggests that there are differences between gamblers and non-gamblers. To prevent problem gambling, there is a need to develop different communication messages for gamblers and non-gamblers.

Until now, there are no approved treatment against COVID-19. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) was hypothesized to be active against SARS-CoV2 via antiviral and anti-inflammatory effect; however, HCQ for COVID-19 in clinical use remained debating. In this preliminary report, we presented six patients with mild to moderate COVID-19. They were treated with HCQ for 14 days from the day of COVID-19 diagnosis. Serial viral load from respiratory specimens were performed every other day. Cytokine profile was checked before HCQ initiation and on the 14th day of HCQ treatment. All patients receiving HCQ completed 14-day course without complication. Among the six patients, the mean duration from symptom onset to last detectable viral load was 34 ± 12 days, which was similar to those without specific treatment in previous reports. Low level of interferon-gamma was noted in all patients of different stage of infection and three patients had elevation of IL-17 level. Prolonged virus shedding is still observed regardless HCQ. The impact of HCQ on cytokine kinetics remained unclear; however, IL-17 could be an inflammatory marker for disease status monitor and a potential therapeutic target.

Malaria has had a major effect on the human genome, with many protective polymorphisms-such as the sickle-cell trait-having been selected to high frequencies in malaria-endemic regions1,2. The blood group variant Dantu provides 74% protection against all forms of severe malaria in homozygous individuals3-5, a similar degree of protection to that afforded by the sickle-cell trait and considerably greater than that offered by the best malaria vaccine. Until now, however, the protective mechanism has been unknown. Here we demonstrate the effect of Dantu on the ability of the merozoite form of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum to invade red blood cells (RBCs). We find that Dantu is associated with extensive changes to the repertoire of proteins found on the RBC surface, but, unexpectedly, inhibition of invasion does not correlate with specific RBC-parasite receptor-ligand interactions. By following invasion using video microscopy, we find a strong link between RBC tension and merozoite invasion, and identify a tension threshold above which invasion rarely occurs, even in non-Dantu RBCs. Dantu RBCs have higher average tension than non-Dantu RBCs, meaning that a greater proportion resist invasion. These findings provide both an explanation for the protective effect of Dantu, and fresh insight into why the efficiency of P. falciparum invasion might vary across the heterogenous populations of RBCs found both within and between individuals.

Early preventive interventions may delay the onset of dementia for people with mild cognitive impairment. This study was designed to examine the effects of the biopsychosocial functional activity program on the cognitive function of community middle to older adults with mild cognitive impairment. A cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted. The experimental group received a 12-month biopsychosocial functional activity program intervention that contained two phases. The first phase was a 6-week teaching program followed by a second-phase home follow-up phase. The measurement was carried out at baseline, 6 months and 12 months after the biopsychosocial functional activity program. The measurement tool was the Chinese version of the Saint Louis University Mental Status Examination. The Generalized Estimating Equations statistical approach was used to analyze the data. The experimental group showed significant short-term and continuous improvement in overall cognitive function in the immediate- and short-term memory domain while the domain of attention and executive function showed improvement on the 12-month measurement compared to the control group. Yet, there was no significant improvement overall and in the three domains of cognitive function for the control group. The findings may become references for advancing the dementia prevention program for communities as well as the national policies for dementia prevention programs.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional introgression from genetically modified (GM) oilseed rape (Brassica napus) to a relative is inevitable in the open field. A feasible and practical strategy for restricting the spread of GM offspring is to set a reasonable isolated distance between GM B. napus and the relatives. To define the isolated distance, a pollen donor/recipient pair is a prerequisite to conducting the field trial of pollen flow. However, because the cultivation of GM B. napus is prohibited in Taiwan, it is difficult to obtain relevant information. Thus, this study explored the morphological and genetic characteristics of five varieties of B. napus (donor), three varieties of B. rapa (recipient), and the 15 corresponding F1 hybrids, aiming to construct phenotypic data and genetic variation data and to select the most appropriate pollen donor/recipient for future field trials of pollen flow. RESULTS: The genome size of all F1 hybrids estimated using flow cytometry showed intermediate DNA content between B. napus and B. rapa varieties. Most of the F1 hybrids had intermediate plant height and blooming period, and the rosette leaves type and colors resembled those of B. napus varieties. The results of sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) showed an average of 9.52 bands per primer combination and 67.87 polymorphic bands among the F1 hybrid population. Similarity and cluster analyses revealed higher similarity between F1 hybrids and B. napus varieties than between F1 hybrids and B. rapa varieties. Furthermore, we identified a specific 1100-bp band (LOC106302894) in F1 hybrids and B. napus varieties but not in B. rapa varieties. CONCLUSIONS: The rosette leaves and the DNA marker LOC106302894 observed in F1 hybrids are consistent phenotypic and genetic characteristics that can be used to identify the presence of unintentional hybridization from B. napus to B. rapa in Taiwan. Due to the prohibition of GM crop cultivation, the hybridization system of non-GM Brassica species in this study can be utilized as a mimic scheme to conduct pollen flow trials, thus facilitating the determination of the proper isolated distance.

To date, studies on the application of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) in the detection of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are stably increasing and demonstrates LAMP is a potential and promising method for on spot identification of GMOs. However, little information is known for detection of GM potato events by LAMP. In this report, we developed an optimized and visual LAMP assay with high specificity and sensitivity to rapidly amplify genomic DNA of potato EH92-527-1 within 45 min. The limit of detection of LAMP in our study is 10-fold higher than the conventional PCR. Furthermore, LAMP products can be directly observed via naked eyes by addition of SYBR Green I without gel electrophoresis analysis and PCR-based equipment. Therefore, the LAMP assay developed in this paper provides an efficient, convenient and cost-effective tool for the detection of GM potato EH92-527-1.

We investigated the self-assembled structures and photoresponsive and crystallization behaviors of supramolecules composed of 4-methoxy-4'-hydroxyazobenzene (Azo) molecules and polyethylene glycol (PEG) that were formed through hydrogen-bonding interactions. The Azo/PEG complexes exhibited the characteristics of photoresponse and crystallization, which originated from Azo and PEG, respectively. When Azo/PEG complexes were dissolved in solvents, hydrogen-bonding interaction hindered the rotation and inversion of mesogens, causing a reduction in the photoisomerization rate compared with the photoisomerization rate of the neat Azo. The confinement of Azo/PEG complexes in thin films further resulted in a substantial decrease in the photoisomerization rate but an increase in the amounts of H-aggregated and J-aggregated mesogens. Regarding PEG crystallization, ultraviolet irradiation of Azo/PEG complexes increased the quantity of high-polarity cis isomers, which improved the compatibility between mesogens and PEG, subsequently increasing the crystallization temperature of PEG. Moreover, the complexation of Azo and PEG induced microphase separation, forming a lamellar morphology. Within the Azo-rich microphases, mesogens aggregated to form tilted monosmectic layers. By contrast, PEG crystallization within the PEG-rich microphases was hard confined, indicating that the domain size of the lamellar morphology was unchanged during PEG crystallization.
